Enzymes are a protein made from living cells that institute ‘change.” They cause one substance to transform so they can be utilized by other living organisms. There are several classifications of enzymes in the human body, but Digestive Enzymes are a classification that we need to pay attention to every single day.
Our bodies need to absorb the nutrients in food. That is the whole point of food, other than calories (energy). Digestive enzymes break down all the food we eat, and each one of them work on certain portions of the food so that the body can absorb it (IF the body has a healthy gut!) and use it to survive or to heal. Some enzymes are made in our body in the pancreas, and some enzymes are naturally available in food. Have you ever bruised an apple and it starts turning brown and gets mushy? That’s because when the apple was damaged, the digestive enzymes were released and it starts digesting.
But here’s the kicker. Most processed foods have had the digestive enzymes removed from them to help preserve them! So they don’t turn into rotten apples on your shelf! So, not only do processed foods have vitamins and minerals removed (as much as 98% loss of certain vitamins in refined white bread, for example), but the digestive enzymes needed to process what is left are removed. Other than eliminating processed foods from your diet , the only answer is to ‘take’ Digestive Enzyme supplements.
We’ve all seen shredded cheese, conveniently in little strands ready for pizza or toppings. Why doesn’t it stick together like cheese does when we shred it at home and try to store it? Because they have added Cellulose (made from wood pulp), and our body does not make Cellulase (the enzyme) needed to digest it.
How does our body react without years of proper digestive enzymes?
•Pancreatic problems, including cystic fibrosis, pancreatic cancer, and acute or chronic pancreatic.
•Brush Border Dysfunction, the most severe is Celiac Disease, where the brush border is flattened or sometimes destroyed.
•Chron’s Disease.
•Low-grade inflammation in the digestive tract.
•Malnutrition, from not being able to absorb nutrients properly.
•Various vitamin deficiencies, from not being able to absorb the vitamins from foods properly
•Random allergies and illnesses from above deficiencies and from toxic waste which was not able to be broken down in the body.
How do we correct this problem with Digestive Enzymes?
Dietary interventions which will reduce inflammation in the body and digestive tract, improving nutrient deficiencies, removing enzyme inhibitors such as grains, and fixing gut bacteria all work hand in hand to get back on track.
Whole foods, raw foods, and well balanced diets can help you ingest the proper enzymes and assist the pancreas in producing ones it is responsible for. This is why detoxing and setting your body up with a good intestinal flora (see Probiotics) are so important.
Eliminating Chronic Stress is another important factor. This is one of the most common reasons, in addition to inadequate diet , for digestive problems. Our body has two modes, “fight or flight” (sympathetic) and ‘rest and digest” (parasympathetic. When you are in constant ‘fight or flight’ your body’s digestions and enzyme output is diminished.

If you take a Digestive Enzyme product for repair while changing your dietary and lifestyle patterns, make sure it is a ‘multiple’ digestive enzyme product and that you take them within 30 minutes of your meals. You should not need to take them with snacks, unless you have severe problems.
