How to get those mental skills
Think great things. For example, Muhammed Ali is remembered as an epic trash-talker, constantly reminding the world of how wonderful he was. He always told people that he was the greatest. This was how he maintained a positive attitude . Always remember to be a great fighter, you have to think you’re great. You have to constantly remember that setbacks are not the end, just a turn of events.
Be motivated. All great fighters are motivated even when they don’t want to be. For example, the weather could be horrible. But, the best athletes train no matter the weather or conditions of the training facility. If you want something desperately enough, you have to stay motivated.
Be realistic. Setting goals that are achievable yet remain just out of reach are ways to train your mind to be great. For example, you can say that you will win five fights a month and make sure you do. To make it work, you should schedule more than five fights a month.
Follow the golden rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Great fighters work well with others. They listen to their trainers, sponsors and others. They respect the opinions of family , friends and critics. They incorporate their advice into their training and mental abilities.
Use a positive mantra. When you are talking to yourself, you should always say you can do this regardless of how discouraged you might be.
Find a happy place. Often, athletes will picture a place that makes them happy. When they are stressed, they go that mental imagery to relax. As a MMA fighter, you would need to have mental focus so using a mental image that makes you happy and strong is necessary.
Don’t get anxious. All athletes need time to relax, or they will get crushed under the pressure to win surrounding them. MMA fighters are most effective when they are relaxed. Find a way to get rid of your stress -- massage , yoga , reading, etc.
Stay calm. Do you remember John McEnroe? Every time something went wrong for him on the tennis court, he got in a temper. You don’t want to be like that. Successful athletes and MMA fighters need a tight reign on their emotions to stay focused and win.
Concentrate only on the fight. Tune out everything around you while training and fighting. You can’t let distractions take you away from your ultimate goals of winning and being successful.

When training to be an athlete, you should keep these nine mental skills in mind. If you don’t, you could get performance anxiety and other mental problems often lead to muscle tension. Tense muscles require much more energy to operate. Furthermore, a confused, anxious athlete will not be able to respond dynamically to unexpected challenges.
