There are so many things I learned today.

a. I learned that the newlywed couple is now referred to as Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. He is Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, while she is simply Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (no, you may not call her Princess Kate).

b. I found out that at least 340 people died because of the severe weather in the US. That is just so horrible.

c. I was fascinated to find out that the lace used for the bridal gown was made by the Royal School of Needlework workers who assisted Sarah Burton in combining French Chantilly lace with English Cluny lace using the Carrickmacross lace making process which originated in Ireland in the 1820s. Apparently, the process of sewing was so delicate that workers were required to wash their hands every 30 minutes to keep the lace and threads pristine and unblemished. I wonder what soap they used.

d. I also learned that Pope John Paul II will be beatified in a few days in what is considered the swiftest postulation in the history of saint making. I learned further that beatification and canonization do not elevate people in the eyes of God, only in the eyes of men. For in the eyes of God, all is equal.

e. I found out that there is a difference between missing and unaccounted for. Tuscaloosa city officials reported that 446 people were unaccounted for although not necessarily missing. Upon further research, it turned out that "unaccounted for" simply means they cannot be located, while "missing" refers to people who cannot be located AFTER a search operation. So, if I cannot find someone at home, I will tell the police, he is unaccounted for. However, after I will call up everyone and wait long enough, then I will declare him missing!

And that is just for half an hour! Imagine the many things I can learn if I spend a day watching TV, surfing the internet, checking my email subscriptions, chatting with friends, opening my facebook and twitter accounts, and texting with my colleagues.

But what difference does it really make if I know a lot, if I don't know what are the essential things?

We are wired to one another. I can reach anyone through a series of links and clicks. It is fast. It is easy. It is convenient.

If I want to, I can talk to a childhood friend living in another continent via Skype. If I want to, I can ask a friend in Rome to send me real-time photos of the beatification ceremony. If I want to, I can send an email message to the Prime Minister of New Zealand and ask him to count again how many sheep there are in his country.

Do I want to is another story altogether. What is the whole point of talking to someone if I don't have anything helpful to say? What is the whole point of opening an email if I am not interested in knowing other people's story?

Yes, we are connected, but are we communicating? Or more importantly, are we communing with the rest of humanity. Not necessarily. But at least, we are connected.

Cathrine’s own life has had personal challenges that have informed and transformed her, the most significant being when she was diagnosed with apparent MS. Rather than regarding this as a limitation, she has embraced it and used for personal transformation. Working with it in her personal practice, she has not only brought herself back to good health, but has used it to inform and illuminate her life’s path.
