The nice thing about it is that it doesn’t have to go into some landfill and pollute the planet. This is actually a guilt-free process, although it doesn’t always feel like it.

Why not? Because so much of our mental trash has these labels on it like “Mom gave this to me, do not throw away.” Or it could have been my teacher in third grade. Or… well, whoever – the details don’t matter. What matters is that we’ve bought someone else’s idea of what we’re supposed to think, who we’re supposed to be, or how we’re supposed to act.

And, truth be told, they were probably just doing the best they knew how at the time, given who they were, the way they were raised, the environment they were functioning in and so forth. But the point is that we’re left with a lot of trash cluttering up our minds, and because of the messages that came stuck to those unhelpful thoughts, we find ourselves reluctant – or just plain unable – to get rid of those thoughts, even though they’re not serving us at all well.

However, if you’re going to live an emotionally free and joyful life, you’ve got to take a good hard look at thoughts that are no longer doing you any good. Thoughts like “I’m not good enough” or “people will take advantage of me” or “I have to be perfect to be loved” or “people like us don’t have money.”

Thoughts like these (and many, many others) are toxic, they don’t help us, they don’t help our friends and family , and they don’t help the world.

In her book, “You Can Heal Your Life,” Louise Hay has a great line: “Would you really dig in to yesterday’s garbage to make tonight’s meal? Do you dig into old mental garbage to create tomorrow’s experiences?”

Because that’s exactly what we’re doing when we don’t let go of our old stuff. Our tomorrows are created from our thoughts today. If we want a different tomorrow than today and yesterday, the only way to do it is to change our thoughts. Same olds thoughts, same old junk.

So let me ask you this: do you feel guilty throwing out old spoiled food, or running it through the garbage disposal? Even if Mom originally cooked the meal? It doesn’t matter how much love Mom put into the roast, if it’s begun to look like a weird science project, it’s time to let it go, no ifs but or guilts about it.

We all need to periodically take inventory of our beliefs, how we think about ourselves, our place in life, others, our relationships and even life itself. If the beliefs no longer serve us, then it’s time to release them. It’s a continuing process. Just like we don’t take out the trash or clean out the refrigerator just once, and figure we never have to do it again, it’s the same with our thoughts and beliefs.

It’s not a sign of weakness or inconsistency, or an admission that there’s something wrong with you because you don’t believe today what you did yesterday. It’s a sign of maturity and growth, it’s a sign of life, and part of the continual process essential to life, whether physical or mental, whether we’re talking about a tree, a flea, or a person: the old stuff that’s not working any more has to be released or it poisons the system.

The good news is that there are now a lot of effective, gentle ways to do just that if you need a little help through this process. Cutting edge energy medicine, or energy psychology , is one of the real miracles of the modern era. I encourage you to investigate the many methods and techniques, and get the help of a caring practitioner in whatever system seems to resonate with you.

You’ll feel lighter, clearer, and if you make this a regular part of your life, your life will just get continually better and better.

Such a deal!
