The movie was adapted from the 2000 stage play named ‘You’ and stars Kam Woo-sung, Lee Joon-gi, and Jung Jin-young. Its story follows a Joseon dynasty king, Yeonsan, and the street entertainers Jangsaeng and Gong-Gil who mock the king.

The street performing duo eventually gets arrested for treason and the sentence for such crimes is death . Jangsaeng makes a deal for their life that they will either make the king laugh with their skit or be executed. This was one of the best Korean movies of 2006 and was the official submission from South Korea for Best Foreign Language Film for the Academy Awards.

Ode to My father is a family drama directed by Yoon Je-known and this South Korean film was released in 2014. The film is set over different periods starting from the 1950s to modern-day Korea. It follows the journey of a common man who strives to keep the promise he gave to his father despite the hardships of life.

The film follows the life of Deok-soo and his love for his family starting from a young age until he grows old. The film follows the agony of separation of a family due to the Hungnam Evacuation during the Korean War in 1950, the government policies during the Vietnam War to dispatch nurses and miners.

The film is one of the highest-grossing Korean movies and the movie is widely considered as the Korean Forest Gump.MY RATING 8 /10

MOTHER

Mother is a South Korean thriller film starring Kim Hye-Ja and Won Bin directed by Bong Joon-ho released in 2009. The story follows the life of a widow who lives alone with her mentally disabled son. One day their whole life is turned upside down when the son is accused of murdering a young girl. With all the options of saving her son from prison gone, she attempts to find the true killer.

The movie has an original plot that sweeps the audience and grips them on the edge of their seats. The movie is a must-watch for the direction of Bong Joon-ho and the performance of Kim Hye-Ja alone. The director of the movie Bong Joon-ho is known for his masterpiece Memories of Murder released back in 2003. The movie is completely different from his previous work and for that reason doesn’t feel like the typical monster movie.

Train to Busan is a South Korean Zombie survival film directed by Yeon Sang-ho. This 2016 action-horror movie stars Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, and Ma Dong-Seok. Just as the name suggests most of the film takes place on a train going towards Busan. Everything goes to hell with the breaks out of zombie apocalypse and threatens the safety of the passengers and in the country.

The movie follows a divorced father trying to protect his child along with few survivors who may or may not extend a hand for help set around the Korean bullet train. The movie is highly recommended for those who like Zombie apocalypse with a story that has a good mix of reality, danger, thrill, and emotion.MY RATING 7.7 /10

I SAW THE DEVIL

I Saw the Devil is an action thriller film directed by Kim Jee-Woon and written by Park Hoon-Jung. This South Korean movie released in 2010 follows National Intelligence Service agent Kim Soo-Hyun played by Lee Byung-hun on a mission of revenge. The story is Kim Soo-Hyun's quest for the blood of the psychopathic serial killer who is responsible for the brutal murder of his fiancée.

The movie is violent and graphic portraying the primal need for revenge that is within every one of us and sometimes evoking the same reaction from its viewers. The movie due to its violent content was forced to make around seven cuts removing about eighty and ninety seconds of graphic visuals for its theatrical release by The Korea Media Rating Board.

This is a must-watch for those dark action thriller movie enthusiasts and one of the best Korean movies of the past decade.MY RATING 7.9 /10

The film follows the life of a disgraced police officer who is working as a pimp due to his financial trouble. His new world falls apart when two of his prostitutes go missing.

With time against him, the former officer must find the evidence against the killer before he could take another life. The movie is based on real events and follows the struggle to catch the hateful serial killer. With amazing performances, music, and an intense script the viewers are always on edges of their seats making it one of the best Korean movie.

The film is inspired by real-life Korean serial killer Yoo Young-Chul and was shot in parts of Seoul where the real-life incident had taken place.MY RATING 7.6 /10

The movie is based on the historical events surrounding the battle of Myeongnyang. The movie contains an ensemble of prominent Korean movie stars led by Choi Min-Sikas the Korean naval commander Yi Sun-sin.

The story follows Admiral Yi Sun-sin as he faces a tough challenge when he has just 13 battleships to fight against 300 Japanese enemy ships and defend his nation in the Battle of Myeongryang.
