In the Chinese system, colds and other viral infections or bacterial infections are viewed as pathogens that penetrate various layers of our energy.

The outer most layer of our energy is the wei qi, associated most closely with our immunity system.

Once a pathogen breaks through the outer layer of energy, it attempts to move deeper within the energy body towards the internal organs. Thus, opening the portals (e.g. pores and outer layers of the body's energy) to encourage the pathogens to move out of the body is an effective energy healing strategy to regain health.

Often times, people take pharmaceutical drugs to relieve symptoms. While these solutions can be effective, most pharmaceutical drugs do not open the portals to fully move pathogens out of the body. As a result, some pathogens may move into a latent stage where symptoms subside but overall immunity energy remains low.

One of the simplest ways to open the portals to help move pathogens move out is exercise . However, people with latent viruses often feel temporarily worse after exercising. So, they stop exercising.

This exacerbation of symptoms is known as a healing crisis where the pathogens are coming out of a latent stage and moving out towards the surface. Thus, I often advise clients to pick a time when they can allow themselves some down time if they are going to use exercise to release pathogens. Get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids and eat lightly.

Usually within 48-72 hours of a healing crisis, people feel much better especially when receiving acupressure or herbs designed to support the body during healing crisis.

Qi gong exercise is also very helpful energy healing method that purges pathogens and provides support to healing crisis with its gentle movements and breath work that can be performed even when one is sitting, or lying down and resting.

In particular, the lung movements of the Taoist Five and also the bow position of the Eight Treasures help to not only open the portals to purge viruses but also strengthen the lung and large intestine meridians or energy pathways, both of which are associated with the immunity system. Thus, clients are empowered to move through healing colds and viruses more rapidly with less lingering fatigue and symptoms.
