The physics behind a good golf swing are simply mind-boggling . After setting aside the fact the body is required to coil and recoil in ways the body wasn't intended to do, a golfer goes through the motion of a golf swing in the hopes they can consistently make contact with a golf ball within a 1/2 inch margin of error on a golf club face that measures 4 inches long. That's asking a lot of science.

The good news is that a novice golfer can learn to use muscle memory training to create a golf swing that delivers consistent results on a consistent basis. This can be accomplished with a few lessons from knowledgeable pro, lots of practice and a few helpful tips.

1. Holding a Golf Club - Beginners often have issues with establishing a the proper placement of the hands on the golf club. The secret is to not fight what the body does naturally. Set your hands at your side, look at the natural angle of your hands with the club resting on your groin area, reach down and grip the club with that exact same angle, putting your two thumbs pointing straight down the club on the grip.

2. The Grip - Now that you have the proper hold on the club, you have three grips from which to choose.
Varden Grip - Overlap the pinkie finger on your bottom hand between the index and middle fingers on the top hand
Interlocking Grip - Similar to Varden grip except you lock the pinkie finger with the index finger
Baseball Grip - Hold it like a baseball bat

3. The Stance - relaxed, feet shoulder width apart, inside shoulder pointed towards the target.

4. Basic Swing - On the backswing, you want to lift the club by rotating your inside should slightly to the inside while shifting your weight to the toe of your back foot until the club aligns over your head and your back arm is in an L-shape, then recoil into your downswing by releasing your L-shaped arm and shifting your weight to the front foot with a full follow through. Keep your eyes fixated on the back of the ball.

5. Establish a Swing Rhythm - No matter which club you are using, you want to establish a consistent mental rhythm in your swing, which will eventually render consistent results. This is accomplished by practice and more practice.

6. Don't Over-swing - With the proper grip, body alignment, swing and rhythm, you will generate enough power to send the ball down the fairway. Nothing is accomplished by rearing back and letting fly with your swing.

The next time you go to the range, you should practice the basics by using these tips and keeping it simple. Once you have your golf swing on solid ground, you will have plenty of time to learn how to generate more power and accuracy.
