As with LSD, 1β-LSD is likely to act as a partial agonist at the 5-HT2A receptor. The psychedelic effects are believed to be primarily due to its potency at 5-HT2A receptors distributed in the brain. It is also likely to show binding activity at many monoamine receptors, such as dopamine and noradrenaline, due to structural similarity to LSD. However, the exact role of these interactions and how they lead to a psychedelic experience requires further investigation.

It has been hypothesized that 1β-LSD may act as a prodrug of LSD. Although 1P-LSD shows only 38% potency of LSD in mice, LSD is detected by LC-MS when 1P-LSD is incubated in human serum.
