Does your blood pressure rise the mere thought of the holidays approaching? I used to get caught up in the frenzy and pace of the holidays, until I realized it was depleting me and taking my focus off of what really mattered. I made some changes, shifted my attitude and began looking forward to and embracing this time of year. Has this time of year turned into more stress and frazzlement than fun and celebrating traditions? There is no denying that this time of year is full and busy. You can however make some simple changes in your life to bring about some balance. You will likely encounter rude and ungrateful individuals, you'll probably surround yourself by people that don't have similar attitudes as yourself. Why not try taking a deep breath, letting go of insignificant details, while enjoying the moment. This time of year is about spending time with family , expressing gratitude in your life and sharing with those less fortunate. Keep that in mind and it will be easier to push away feelings of bitterness and stress.
ACTION STEPS FOR THE WEEK:
1. Prepare, prepare, preparePlanning ahead for what is to come will only alleviate stress later on. What can you prepare for now that you won't have to face later on? Do you have holiday shopping? Will relatives be visiting that you need to prepare for? Create a master list of what needs to be accomplished by when. Next begin crossing items off the list as you take care of them.
2. Take a breath
You will undoubtedly encounter stressed people during the holidays. Instead of taking on their energy as your own, take a deep breath and let it go. Easier said than done you say? Of course it is, but you do have a choice as to how you will respond. You will feel much better walking
away than getting engaged in their energy and negativity.
3. Don't overcommitThis time of year you calendar can easily fill up with party after party. If you truly want to enjoy the holidays, take some time for yourself and learn to say no. You aren't obligated to attend every gathering, nor do you have the time to do so. Pick and choose and then enjoy some down time in between.
